Aliquippa, PA – ARDEX Americas, the leading developer, and manufacturer of specialty, high-performance products for substrate preparation, tile and stone installation, concrete moisture control, concrete repair and resurfacing, and finished surface installations hosted an International Concrete Repair Institute (ICRI) Slab Moisture Testing Certification Course at the ARDEX Americas Technical Training Center at the ARDEX Americas corporate headquarters in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania.
The ICRI Slab Moisture Testing Certification Class educates installers are on the proper testing
methods and procedures for moisture in concrete. The class has two tiers. Tier 1 applicants are those who are not regularly engaged in moisture testing, yet have an active interest in learning more about the tests, what the tests mean, and how the tests should be performed. Tier 2 applicants are those who have applied for full certification. Both tiers require attendance at a 3-hour educational session, followed by a written exam. Tier 2 full certification applicants will also be required to perform each of the four field tests under the watchful eye of a qualified judge who will not provide any level of coaching. Prequalification for acceptance into full certification Tier 2 will be previous testing experience. The class held at the ARDEX Americas Technical Training Center on September 23 – 24, 2010 incorporated Tier 1 and Tier 2 certification and was attended by 30 installation professionals from across the United States.
Estimates have moisture as the cause for over one billion dollars in flooring failures annually. “One of
the key concerns is that moisture testing is being overlooked and when testing is performed it is often times done incorrectly,” said Scott M. Tarr, PE of Concrete Engineering Specialists. Mr. Tarr was one of four instructors for the ICRI Moisture Testing Certification class and is a nationally recognized expert on moisture in concrete. Mr. Tarr further stated, “Increased pressure on installation professionals to meet shorter and shorter deadlines and to cut costs often results in short cuts. One such short cut is moisture testing and the installation of reliable moisture control systems.”
“Awareness, education and training for moisture testing and developing standardized testing procedures is vital to correcting the large number of flooring failures every year caused by moisture,” said Peter Craig of PC Floors and Past President of ICRI. Mr. Craig was also an instructor for the ICRI Moisture Testing Certification classes. “Training established by organizations like ICRI is an excellent way to increase awareness about this very serious issue and to get installation professionals trained properly. The support of companies like ARDEX is also very important. Through the use of their excellent technical training facilities to conduct these classes, as well as their commitment to conduct their own moisture training greatly enhances our efforts.”
