Situation

When Hunt Construction landed the contract for The CONSOL Energy Center, they contracted with ARDEX Choice Contractor™ E.F. Marburger to install carpeting throughout the new complex. 16,000 yards of Shaw and Interface carpet tile would be installed in luxury suites, press boxes, locker rooms, clubs and administration offices. An acrylic sealer used on the pre-cast concrete slabs caused bonding problems for the carpet tile adhesive and the locker room areas. These same areas had moisture issues that had to be addressed. Because numerous trades were working in the same areas and a water sprinkler malfunctioned, some carpeting and cove base was damaged and required replacement.

Solution

Once on the job, the E.F. Marburger crew realized the pre-cast concrete slabs contained an acrylic sealer that would affect bonding of the carpet adhesive to the concrete. To correct this, the crew primed the concrete with ARDEX P 82™ Ultra Prime and used ARDEX GPS™ General Patch and Skimcoat to prep the surface before installing the carpet tile. ARDEX FEATHER FINISH® Self-Drying, Cement-Based Finish Underlayment was used in luxury suite kitchen areas where a hard surface floor was installed in front of the sinks. Carpet tile was installed with HENRY® 630 PeachPro™ Pressure Sensitive Adhesive. E.F. Marburger previously used HENRY 630 for installing carpet tile in heavy traffic areas and knew it would work in the CONSOL Energy Center. HENRY® 595 Cove Base Adhesive was used to install 16 miles of rubber cove base because it’s easy to use, easy to clean and has superior performance. Mike Hartzler, E.F Marburger Project Manager stated, “We always choose ARDEX and HENRY products. We know they get the job done faster and done right. On a high profile job like the CONSOL Energy Center, there is no room for failure. We count on ARDEX and HENRY performance every time.”
