Amarillo High School's Cafeteria Renovations
Amarillo High School, Caprock High School and Palo Duro High School had not been renovated in 30 years. The kitchen/cafeteria remodels were to reflect modern, clean lines using cutting edge tile and
installation products. A competitor’s product failed to install the large-format Laminam tiles properly and new product installation solutions were required.
The building designs at the new ATCO Commercial Centre were inspired by two iconic Alberta images; the Rocky Mountains and the flowing lines of a prairie stream. Although stunningly beautiful, these designs made for a complex flooring installation throughout each building area.
The new Audi dealership in Blainville, Canada was about to begin construction on its 14,000 square feet service center and surrounding drive-throughs. Flooring installation products had not yet been selected, due to the high demand for a single source manufacturer that could meet the strict requirements for waterproofing and uncoupling. The lead contractors also highly preferred a single source manufacturer whose products were backed by a comprehensive warranty.
Automobiles Guy Beaudoin Showroom
The Automobiles Guy Beaudoin dealership was starting a complete remodel and expansion of their current showroom floor and auto parts department. New and existing concrete slabs were in juxtaposition. The showroom subfloor had an epoxy coating that could not be mechanically removed, due to concerns of dust affecting the remaining open areas of the dealership. Though flooring installation products had not yet been selected, the demand for a single source manufacturer that could meet strict requirements, such as true uncoupling to overcome the concrete slab issues, was of the highest concern. A full system warranty for all manufactured products was also required.
Bechtold Residence Swimming Pool
The Becktold family planned to install a brand new swimming pool in their Oregon home. A complex glass mosaic tile installation required high-quality installation materials be used. Anderson Poolworks planned to use a competitors system for the tile installation but after learning they would have to wait four weeks before tiles could be submerged, decided to look for more options. Bed Bath & Beyond Satélite Mexico
The existing ceramic tile was in bad shape, and this 20,082 sq. ft. store was due to open soon. A smooth substrate was vital for the high performance vinyl flooring to be installed, and the size of the installation made material logistics a challenge. To top it off, the flooring installation could not interfere with other trades who also had to meet the tight deadline.
Bell MTS Place
The Bell MTS Center, home of the NHL Winnipeg Jets, was scheduled to receive a fresh look makeover and a very tight timeline to do it in. With many moving parts inclusive of porcelain panel staging, material storage, skilled installers and trade schedules – it took a collaborative effort to pull the project together. With strict requirements for installation products, a single-source manufacturer that could provide a solution to all installation challenges was required.
Bellevue Drive Private Residence
In early spring 2015, the Bellevue Drive home owners were
ready to begin an exterior façade tile installation. Inclement
weather and high temperatures often delayed the installation

Best Chevy Car Dealership
General Motors requires its dealerships to undergo showroom renovations every five years to maintain a chic and inviting atmosphere. In keeping with these requirements, Best Chevrolet Hingham was to install new 16 x 16 porcelain tiles in its showroom. Roth & Seelen, Inc., wanted to install the new tiles on top of existing 12 x 12 porcelain tiles, but was concerned new tile joints might line up with old tile joints and become unstable causing lippage and tripping hazards. The new floor would have to withstand heavy vehicle loads (i.e. Chevy Suburban) rolled on the sales floor using hard casters. As many as 15 vehicles are displayed on the showroom floor at one time. Beverly Hills Medical Building
The Willshire Medical Building is located in Beverly Hills. The exterior facade was covered with 3’ x 3 3/4’ granite slabs mechanically affixed to the building. The building owner decided to renovate the interior and exterior of the building with porcelain tile. For aesthetic purposes, the porcelain tiles chosen for the exterior cladding were very thin 20” x 40” that were just 5mm thick, and 40” x 96” only 3.5 mm thick.
Beverly Wilshire Hotel
The Four Seasons Beverly Wilshire Hotel is world-renowned for its award-winning restaurant experiences. After many years of use, the commercial kitchen was due for an upgrade. Pre-tile
surface preparation measures were required before new tile
could be installed. The hotel required a 10-year warranty on all
tile installation products.
Billy Bishop Airport Pedestrian Tunnel
Located on Toronto Island, Billy Bishop Airport is Canada’s ninth busiest and welcomes more than two million business and leisure travelers each year. The new 550 foot long, 60 foot wide pedestrian tunnel project located 100 feet below ground allows travelers to reach the airport by foot. This tunnel is the first land-link
between Toronto Island and the mainland. Twenty five thousand square feet of 3’ x 3’ (1m x 1m) fiberglass backed porcelain Laminam wall tile were to be installed on walls and 30,000 square feet of 12” x 24”(30cm x 60cm) porcelain tiles on tunnel floors. Calgary Public Library
The highly anticipated Calgary Public Library, still under construction, needed to overcome various substrate issues on each level of the building. With a grand opening scheduled for late 2018, construction delays were not an option.
Cherry Point Mess Hall
After approximately four years of planning, the Cherry Point Mess Hall was scheduled to undergo a more than $10 million renovation to upgrade the facility and install state-of-the-art furnishings and equipment. The original mess hall was built in 1971. A concrete pad area had been poured too high, so there was not enough room to install a normal mud bed sloping to a drain. Click Bond’s factory in Watertown, CT was about to undertake a 4,600 - sq. ft. flooring remodel. Employee productivity could not be impeded due to the flooring work, so minimalizing worker interference was extremely important. Total replacement of the existing floor was not cost prohibited so finding a solution that could utilize the existing subfloor would be needed.
Coast Capital Savings Help Headquarters
Coast Capital Savings headquarters, the newly constructed, 180,000 square-foot, nine story building houses staff offices, a daycare, rooftop lunchroom, a gym and corporate training space. George Lawrence House
Built in 1891, the George Lawrence House underwent a full renovation starting in 2015 to bring the original
historic décor back to life. Using extremely rare and expensive tiles from Italy and across Europe, ARDEX Tile and

walls and shower tile throughout the home. Working on a 125 year old original structure, lacking heat during

Google Office Kitchen Renovation
Google Inc.’s 220,000 square-foot Pittsburgh offices are located in the repurposed Nabisco factory in Bakery Square. H&M Herald Square
The new flagship H&M clothing store located at Herald Center in Manhattan, New York is the largest H&M store in the world. When the building owner began renovations to prepare the historic building for the store opening, some serious flooring issues where discovered. tiles could be installed by six union tile crews throughout the space.

H&M Store (Newbury Street)

Hanscom Air Force Base Building 1618
Hanscom’s host unit is the 66th Air Base Group, which is part of the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center. The men and women of the 66th Air Base Group provide outstanding services to more than 3,000 active duty, Reserve and National Guard military personnel and DoD civilians who work and live at Hanscom Air Force Base. Additionally, they support more than 125,000 retired military personnel, annuitants and spouses living in the six-state New England area and New York. Hopkinton Town Library
Hopkinton Town Library was designed to include UNILOCK’s Natural Gray Sandstone for both inside and outside flooring use. This highly moisture sensitive sandstone would need to be installed over severe floor undulations inside, as well as withstand constant exposure to the harsh New England weather outside.
Hotel Blackfoot, currently under construction, needed to find the proper materials that could securely and safely install the 3’x5’x ½” polished stone panels on the exterior pillars and entryway ceiling.
Intercontinental Montelucia Luxury Resort & Spa

Lime Ridge Mall
Since the day it opened in August 1981, Lime Ridge has enjoyed its position as the Hamilton area’s dominant shopping centre. With over 200 shops and services, Lime Ridge offers the community the widest variety of fashion retailers carrying the latest styles and hottest brands. Mall renovations were scheduled to take place over a three-month time period. Initially, a standard set thin set was specified for the renovations as newly tiled areas were to be cordoned off. Rapid set products were necessary due to the tight schedule required to keep mall areas open for foot traffic and avoid closures during the busy holiday season. Little Rock Air Force Base (AFB) Maintenance and Training Facility
Little Rock Air Force Base was on a 90-day time line for completion. It was essential that the newly installed
flooring could accept C130J engine training equipment immediately after floor was installed. Air Force training classes were to begin as soon as training equipment was in place. Air Force personnel were mandated to install training equipment as soon as floor was ready.

McAllen Irrigation Standpipes Public Art Mosaic Project
The McAllen Public Art Committee designed a series of five
mosaic drawings intended to represent local bird species which
were fabricated into a 1” X 1” glass tile mosaic format. The first
design was inspired by McAllen’s city bird the Green Jay. The
newest tower was inspired by the black-bellied Whistling Duck.
These complicated exterior tile installations required products
that could be installed vertically and withstand the changing
elements. The installation team was particularly challenged

Mercedes-Benz Showroom Floor
The newly constructed 46,000 square-foot Mercedes-Benz car dealership in Langley, British Columbia was scheduled to receive porcelain tile over a newly poured, on grade concrete slab. Several other trades were on site requiring rapid-drying and fast track products to be used

Modern Residence on 45th
Construction was scheduled to begin on a luxurious residence in Vancouver, BC. Moose Hotel and Suites
Banff Caribou Properties started construction on a 172 room hotel featuring 1 indoor pool and 2 rooftop pools, during some winter months. One of the largest developments in Alberta, the Moose Hotel and Suites is a premier destination lodge and resort. Extreme weather conditions in the Rocky Mountains would prove challenging for building the outdoor roof top pools, therefore only the highest quality building materials would be selected.
Mount Nittany Medical Center

Every year, the National Mall hosts more than 33 million visitors. With constant wear-and-tear the grass field starts to diminish in both appeal and performance. A more sustainable, greener National Mall field was needed that would attract millions more visitors. Stone work along the perimeter of the turf would require granite curbs to be set during the cold March weather of Washington D.C.
Nemacolin Fitness Center
Nemacolin Woodlands Resort and Spa planned to unveil in early January, 2017 a fully renovated fitness center. The centerpiece to this project would be a 1,200 square foot gym floor tiled with Dekton Ultra Compact Surfaces 5’ x 5’ Super Format tiles. Adjacent spa areas would remain open during the fitness center renovation. The entire floor construction was to be completed within a one week period.
New Horizon Mall
The New Horizon Mall in Calgary, Aleberta had severe floor variations and slumping after the concrete slab had been poured. Needing to keep the project on schedule, Can West Flooring wanted to secure the best installation products that could remedy the subfloor issues and not delay the installation.
North Creek Mosaic Project
Starting in 2011, the community of North Creek, NY has commissioned
tiling work along a 200 ft. retaining wall flanking the entrance into
downtown. Lead by local artist Kate Hartley, the Jonsburgh Fine Arts
Group, and thousands of volunteers; the North Creek Mosaic Project is
an on-going work in progress. The varying and extreme temperatures
in the Adirondack Mountains would put to the test the workability and
durability of tile and stone mortars. The project was also faced with
overcoming fundraising obstacles and the number of volunteer man
hours needed to complete this community project.
O'Reilly Auto Parts Warehouse
O’Reilly Auto Parts began a $32.9 million rennovation project on a 375,000 square-foot warehouse in Devens with plans to convert an existing building into an automated distribution center with 20,700 square-feet of office space. More than 6,100 square feet of large-format tile was to be installed in lobby areas, hallways, bathrooms and a cafeteria. After existing flooring was removed, large areas of uneven floors were discovered. Before tiles could be installed, leveling

Pacific Rim Charter School
Academy of the Pacific Rim Charter Public School needed to open the 2017-2018 school year with renovations to the main entrance hall completed. The existing subfloor was gypsum-based with a high gloss finish and was cracked throughout the entire 3,800 sq. ft. floor. Budgetary and time constraints required a solution that would finish the job within 2 weeks, while providing a complete system warranty.
Porsche Centre Vancouver was constructing a brand new state-of-the-art facility featuring an impressive display of curved concrete and glass in a modern, spacious decorated showroom. Built in the new hub of luxury car dealers at 688 Terminal Avenue, the dealership boasts more display space for a massive selection of new and used inventory, double the number of service bays and more customer parking. Prairie Ribbon Exterior Mosaic Wall Installation
Fort Worth artist Pamela Summers planned to install a 780-foot mosaic
“ribbon” along a concrete retaining wall on Northeast 15th Street off I-30 for the city of Grand Prairie, Texas. The installation was to take place during the summer so all work was planned for early morning hours before the daily temperature became too hot. Private Residence Exterior Patio
The private family home features a 1,500 square-foot stone tile patio surround. The original installation using competitor’s grouts and mortars failed after four years. Private Residence Swimming Pool - Kelowna, B.C.
After their home was destroyed by a forest fire, the owners of this luxury private residence built a concrete swimming pool embedded into the hillside of the homes backyard with a stunning overlook of a lake and the valley below. The Rothfus Residence was in need of expedited repairs after
water damage from a leak ruined the floors in their kitchen and
entry way. New 12’ x 24’ porcelain tiles were to be installed so an absolutely flat subfloor was required. The tile mortar selected would have to withstand a range of pull tests, extreme heat temperatures, and transportation conditions from offsite installation to final construction site.

Schwartz Athletic Center Indoor Swimming Pool
The Schwartz Athletic Center indoor swimming pool was being fitted for a new stainless steel gutter. When the old gutter was removed, the tile walls began to crumble and fall into the pool. ARDEX Sales Professional Matt Minney was called in by Wallover Architects to evaluate the damage and recommend ARDEX Tile & Stone Installation Systems products to bring the swimming pool back to working order. D. G. March & Associates was given one month to complete the project. In the meantime, Widener University swim team traveled to a temporary location for practice and swim meets. Spirit of Boston
n 2015, the Spirit of Boston touring ship underwent a complete renovation including removal of the existing flooring down to bare metal. A new glass tile dance floor, as well as porcelain tile, carpet, and rubber tile were to be installed throughout the ship. TileCraft & Carpet and Cooley Marine Management insisted on the highest-quality installation materials able to withstand movement in the metal decking and provide a sanitary, easy-to-maintain finish.
SpringHill Suites – Plano, TX

St. Mary's University
Keller Martin Construction and St. Mary’s University reached out to J&R Tile for recommendations on a fast track turnaround for renovations of the Chaminade Hall Dormitory. The project required the work to be completed in phases, where one floor at a time would be completed, 62 total restrooms. Phasing was important due to students occupying the floors above and below where the renovations were being done. The major scope of work was the demolition and replacement of all outdated shower/tub units. The shower valves were replaced by the plumbing contractor, and the existing base and entry to restroom had an outdated tile curb to be replaced. Tesla Motors Showroom (Washington Square)
Tesla Motors Showroom was scheduled to open in Washington
Square Mall in Portland, Oregon. The 2,000 square - foot space had been converted multiple times by previous tenants. As a result, the floors were in severe disrepair. After the old vinyl flooring was removed there were height variations of zero

SuperMall, a hybrid mall located in Auburn, Washington, was to be transformed to a premium outlet center known as

Tottenham Court Road London Underground Station opened as part of the Central London Railway in 1900. Today, due to its location in the capital, it connects over 150,000 passengers daily around London, and this is expected to increase to over 200,000 when Cross Rail services the station in 2018. Platform refurbishments are needed to keep pace with the increase in service.
U.S. Bancorp Tower
A $15 million renovation of the U.S. Bankcorp Tower added 15,000 square feet of rentable space and updated retail facades, staircases and unique glass walkways. The floor substrate was curling and breaking after a toppings slab was poured. Time was crucial as installations had to be done in time for a media open house. Competing manufacturer’s products were specified but could not meet installation requirements. The initial tile installer refused to work on the existing substrate so replacement installation products were needed for the job. Watertower Place Apartment Complex
Watertower Place Apartment Complex in Eden Prairie, Minnesota is a modern community with upscale amenities and an excellent location. The building is situated at the bottom of an industrial area on a sloped hill where rain water and other external moisture sources run towards the building. The building had no landscaping or other barriers to block and absorb environmental water and moisture. West Chester University Graham Natatorium Pool
After 50 years of use, West Chester University decided to renovate the Graham Natatorium Pool used by their men’s and women’s swimming teams, and several local high school and club teams. The pool required a complete overhaul including the removal of all pool deck and interior tiles. West Springfield High School
The project involves adapting and constructing a model school design on the site and then demolishing the existing building. The phased program accommodated uninterrupted continuity of school operations throughout construction. The new design takes into consideration the Massachusetts High Performance Green Schools

Willow Stream Spa at the Fairmont Pacific Rim
The 8,500 square foot Willow Stream Spa at Fairmont Pacific Rim required the re-grouting of five hot tubs. After a few years of use, exterior hot tubs demanded a grout solution that was UV stable and could withstand constant use and submerged conditions. A 260 square foot basement floor in a renovation was specified to receive a porcelain tile floor. The concrete substrate contained an unknown coating that would typically require mechanical removal and significant additional costs.
Multiple moisture remediation and tile and stone installation products were originally specified for the flooring project at the new Zara Clothing store being constructed in the Willowbrook Mall. Tile contractor James Floor Covering Inc., had to finalize installation products that could meet the demands of the challenging subfloor while keeping the project on schedule. A total system solution would be preferred that encompassed subfloor preparation through tile grout.
