Pentagon Phoenix Project

A fast track project that consolidated 24- 36 months to less than 12 months

The devastating impact of the terrorist attacks on 9/11 will be remembered forever. As in the past when confronted with tragic events, the result was the unification of Americans. ARDEX is proud to have played an instrumental part in the quick repair and restoration of the Pentagon after it suffered the impact of a passenger airliner on that day.

Challenge

  • Fast-track project (24- 36 months consolidated to less than 12 months)
  • Severe destruction to concrete floors from impact and fire
  • Severe leveling issues
  • Removing the concrete slabs was not an option

Contractors: Parsons Construction, Faccina Construction
Architect: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
Installer: Levelcrafters, Inc. (ARDEX LevelMaster Elite® Installer)

Situation

The impact of the aircraft and the intense heat from the jet fuel fire caused severe burning and denting of the massive concrete floors. The original plan was to remove and replace the concrete slabs, however doing this would have taken 24 to 36 months to complete the project according to Parsons Construction. This was not an option since Pentagon operations, the command and control center for all U.S. Military Operations could not be disrupted for that period of time. The floors were so unlevel that other trades could not work on them. A fast, durable and permanent solution was required with minimal disruption to Pentagon operations during the construction.

Solution

The ARDEX Team walked the site and met with contractors and architects. ARDEX K 15® Premium Self-Leveling Concrete Underlayment was chosen for this important project by Faccina Construction, because of the extensive track-record of ARDEX K 15 throughout Washington D.C. on several Government and Military Installations. No other alternative was even considered. The high-performance, fast-track attributes of ARDEX K 15 directly contributed to the reduction in the Pentagon restoration from a 24-36 month time frame to just 12 months.

ARDEX LevelMaster Elite® Installer LevelCrafters, Inc was brought in to handle the installation. They made leveling corrections of 1/4” to 7” inches deep over 35,000 sq. ft. The substrates were filled and leveled to a smooth, flat, strong surface restoring the damaged concrete and allowing heavy trade traffic onto the new surfaces in just 10 hours after installation to begin their portion of the restoration. Excellent teamwork between ARDEX manufacturing and customer service with ARDEX partner distributors was essential to ensure an uninterrupted flow of materials to the project to meet the meticulous production schedule. ARDEX Technical and Sales Teams provided project coordination, technical support and jobsite assistance to make sure the installations went smoothly and quickly with a dedicated ARDEX LevelMaster Elite® Installer partner.

Whether it’s the U.S. Pentagon or a small office space, ARDEX is poised to handle the most difficult to the most routine projects with unwavering consistency and support that results in getting the job done right the first time…every time!
