Salt Lake City International Airport

Designed to handle only 10 million people a year, the facility was serving 26 million by 2019

To address the exploding demand on capacity at Salt Lake City International Airport, a new $4.1 billion dollar, four million square foot terminal was constructed.

Installer: Wall2Wall, Salt Lake City,  UT
General Contractor (South Terminal): HDJV- Holder Construction / Big D Construction
Architect: HOK

Challenge

  • Massive transportation sector project
  • First completely new, major airline hub built in the 21st century
  • Largest-ever public works project in the State of Utah
  • The Pandemic made planning and implementation more difficult and unsure

Situation

The old airport was built in the 1960’s and had reached obsolescence. Designed to handle only 10 million people a year, the facility was serving 26 million by 2019. To address this exploding demand on capacity, a new $4.1 billion dollar, four million square foot terminal was constructed. It included two linear North and South concourses, as well as a rental car facility. The project broke ground in May 2017 with a Phase One opening in September 2020.

Solution

The airport’s structural floor assembly of steel, metal pan and concrete in the South Terminal deflected up to one inch, creating “bird baths” in the center of the bays. This substrate required leveling before the installation of cementitious terrazzo. In addition, concrete leveling was required to create transitions to various finish surfaces- including columns, glass walls, stair towers, wheel chair ramps and hard surface flooring. The floor preparation installation contractor for this project, Wall2Wall, recommended and specified ARDEX V 1200 Self-Leveling Underlayment.

Wall2Wall is an ARDEX LevelMaster Elite Installer® (ARDEX LME); a highly skilled, flooring professional that specializes in subfloor preparation, moisture control and toppings. For over 25 years, ARDEX LME’s have provided owners, architects, national accounts and general contractors the highest level of installation performance. The ARDEX LME Installer provides both experience and technical know-how, assuring customers the very best ARDEX installation and performance.

Between November 2019 and September 2020, more than 800 bags of V 1200 were installed every day. The terminal construction is now complete and described as beautiful, on time and on budget.
