Challenge

  • New medical sector construction
  • Tight concrete tolerances & high moisture readings
  • Extensive areas of sheet and luxury vinyl flooring
  • More than 500,000 ft2 leveled, with thicknesses ranging from 5/8” to 3/4”
  • Critical time constraints

Solution

At 660,000 square feet, this 12-story tower is the largest component in the $850 million expansion of the Inova Fairfax Medical Campus. The replacement tower for the Inova Women’s and Children’s Hospitals was scheduled for construction well into the fifth year of a six-year plan. Consequently, scheduling for the new construction was on a very tight timeline.

Because of the fast-track construction schedule, stringent concrete tolerances, required moisture standards from the finish flooring manufacturers and the significant scope of floor prep, the ARDEX team the ARDEX Concrete Management Systems™ (ACMS). ACMS delivers installation options that produce a concrete substrate capable of meeting the most demanding flatness and levelness tolerances for both the flooring and other interior trades while eliminating unplanned leveling and delays.

The subcontractor had to perform the moisture mitigation and leveling work during the later, interior phase of this project and in order to address the demanding schedule, NCFI utilized two AMP® 200 pumps as well as eight mixing barrels with four ROVERs® on this project.

“Despite time constraints and other challenges on this project, ACMS exceeded the expectations of both the installers and the GC,” said the involved ARDEX Sales Professional  “The two AMP 200 pumps plus multiple mixing barrels with teams of installers enabled NCF Installers to complete an average of 12,000 to 18,000 ft2 weekly.” “We’ve worked with Clark Construction and NCFI on previous projects,” said ARDEX Regional Sales Manager Michael Frey. “And they were both extremely happy with the technical support provided by ARDEX from beginning to the end.”
