17 floor, 1 million sq. ft. new hospital construction

Challenge

  • Large project with many other trades involved
  • Difficulty to access upper levels, staging material, mobilizing job onsite
  • Extensive Technical consultation to establish proper CSP’s and the selection of the correct ARDEX system products

Location: Loma Linda, CA
General Contractor: McCarthy Building Companies, Inc (Newport, CA) | Dallas Smith, Senior Project Manager | Kody Davis, Project Superintendent
Installer: Signature Flooring, Inc (Union 1247) | Blake Grimsley, Project Manager

Situation

A new hospital was getting constructed with two towers, 17 floors and comprising of over 1 million sq.ft.

Solution

ARDEX Experts worked with Dallas Smith, Senior Project Manager of McCarthy, and his project team members during the excavation phase of the project. The goal was to develop a custom floor preparation package suited for providing high-performance compressive strength for resurfacing and ARDEX solutions.

Upon completion of site tests, to include absorption tests, the appropriate installation solution was developed together with the team of ARDEX Experts. They decided to use ARDEX Concrete Management Systems™ (ACMS), a patented, specified finishing method for new concrete construction that addresses challenges like moisture, flatness and levelness.

With scope and specs clarified, awarded sub-contractor Blake Grimsley of Signature Flooring Inc. decided to pursue the application on such large and vast footage with a faster and easier option. He upgraded the traditional hand-applied feather finish application with ARDEX K 10™ Reactivatable™ Self Leveling Underlayment at 1/8” and utilized ARDEX P 4™ Rapid Drying Primer for increased production. For areas where the concrete deflected and needed additional material to achieve the required flatness, ARDEX K 15® Self Leveling was used over ARDEX MC™ RAPID.
