Case Studies
Inova Women’s Hospital & Children’s Hospital
Installer: NCF Interiors – Chantilly, VA
General Contractor: Clark Construction Group – Bethesda, MD
Architect: Wilmot Sanz Architecture + Planning – Gaithersburg, MD
The Challenge
- New medical sector construction
- Tight concrete tolerances & high moisture readings
- Extensive areas of sheet and luxury vinyl flooring
- More than 500,000 ft2 leveled, with thicknesses ranging from 5/8” to 3/4”
- Critical time constraints
The Situation
As part of an $850 million expansion at the Inova Fairfax Medical Campus, a new 12-story, 660,000-square-foot tower was constructed to house the Inova Women’s and Children’s Hospitals. With the project entering its fifth year of a six-year build, schedules were extremely tight. Concrete slabs showed high moisture readings and required precise flatness for extensive vinyl and sheet flooring installations. More than 500,000 square feet needed leveling at thicknesses ranging from 5/8” to 3/4”, all under critical time constraints. The Solution
To meet the strict moisture and flatness requirements, the ARDEX team implemented the ARDEX Concrete Management Systems™ (ACMS), providing a substrate that met demanding tolerances while preventing delays. NCF Interiors completed both moisture mitigation and leveling during the interior phase using two AMP® 200 pumps, eight mixing barrels, and four ROVER® units to maximize efficiency. This setup enabled crews to complete 12,000–18,000 square feet per week, keeping the fast-track schedule on pace. Despite the project’s challenges, ACMS exceeded expectations, delivering consistent results and earning praise from both Clark Construction and NCF Interiors for ARDEX’s technical support and on-site collaboration.
